Spartan Prep Academy: Healthy Living

Transforming Public Health in Virginia Video

The Spartan Prep Academy is a year-round program at Norfolk State University that prepares high school students for higher education and the workforce through workshops, skill enrichment, and mentoring — held at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center. Each session focuses on a different area of development, and the Healthy Living event served as the program’s public health-focused experience for the year.

On March 16, 2024, twenty-six students from area schools gathered for an immersive morning designed to connect them with healthcare professionals and introduce practical tools for stress relief and staying active. Interactive presentations led by Dr. Sheila Ward and Dr. Patrick Hudgins encouraged students to get up and move rather than sit through a traditional lecture. A highlight of the morning was a therapeutic drumming session rooted in African cultural tradition, offering students a meaningful and hands-on way to explore the mind-body connection.

The Healthy Living event reflects the Spartan Prep Academy’s commitment to preparing young people not only academically, but holistically — equipping them with the wellness knowledge and habits that support long-term success.
