Portsmouth Health Department – Public Health Competency Training

Transforming Public Health in Virginia Video

The Center for Public Health Initiatives at Norfolk State University partnered with the Portsmouth Health Department to deliver a multi-session public health competency training series in support of the department’s reaccreditation efforts. Led by Dr. Felicia E. Mebane, Executive Director of Public Health Initiatives at NSU, the sessions covered core competency domains including Health Equity (Domain 4), Community Partnership Skills (Domain 5), Management and Finance Skills (Domain 7), and Leadership and Systems Thinking (Domain 8).

Held at the Portsmouth Health Department, the training provided public health professionals with engaging, interactive instruction designed to strengthen workforce skills and meet accreditation requirements. Sessions were conducted in partnership with the Eastern Virginia Area Health Education Center (EV-AHEC), supporting continued funding for public health workforce development initiatives across the region.

This collaboration reflects NSU’s commitment to advancing public health practice and building lasting partnerships with local health departments to improve the health of communities across Hampton Roads.
